Zig Now Better than US$: RBZ.
What i find interesting about the Zimbabwean government and the central bank, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, is that they issue empty, useless statements claiming that the Zimbabwean local currency, the ZIG, is strong and performing better than the US dollar.
Yet if you go to a Zimbabwe government office where payment are made, whether it is for a passport, customs duty when crossing the border from south Africa to Zimbabwe, or customs duty at Harare international airport, they do not accept their own currency, the Zig.
How else can a government demonstrate a lack confidence more clearly than by rejecting its own currency? They do not accept the Zig because they know it is worthless. You cannot even exchange it internationally like other currencies.
They know it does not carry the gravitas they try to project through press statements, newspaper articles and official propaganda. This contradiction exposes the dishonesty at the heart of their messaging.
It is a tragedy because the one thing that could give a currency credibility and confidence is for the issuer of that currency to accept it for government services, for passport, for customs duties, and even for tax payments.
Instead, citizens are forced to pay in US dollars. There is no way a currency can inspire confidence when the very institutions that issues it has none.it is a total joke.
Until Zimbabwaans can walk into a passport office and pay for passport services using the Zig and until Zimbabweans can fly into Harare international Airport or drive through Beitbridge border post and pay their customs duties in the ZIG, the central bank should simply shut up and stop issuing these ridiculous statements that make it look disingenuous, dishonest, and completely disconnected from the reality lived by ordinary Zimbabweans.
