ZIMBABWE’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM FAILS A HERO: DR. NEMBAWARE’S TRAGIC DEATH
The tragic death of Dr. Mthabisi Nembaware in Mutare has shown how bad the healthcare system in Zimbabwe is. Dr. Nembaware, a dedicated doctor, died after a car accident. He could not get the medical care he needed because the hospital in Mutare did not have an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His death has caused many people to be angry and sad, bringing attention to how poor the healthcare system is in the country.
Mutare General Hospital is the main hospital for the eastern part of Zimbabwe, but it was not ready to handle a serious medical emergency like Dr. Nembaware’s accident. This sad event has made everyone see that Zimbabwe’s hospitals do not have enough equipment, medicine, and even basic painkillers.
One of the biggest problems in Zimbabwe’s healthcare system is that many doctors are leaving the country to find better jobs and living conditions elsewhere. This has made the situation even worse, as there are not enough doctors left in Zimbabwe to take care of the people.
The country has been facing an economic crisis for many years, which has made things very bad for the public hospitals. Most public hospitals cannot provide the basic healthcare that people need. This issue became very important in the recent election, as people demanded that the government fix the broken healthcare system.
Veteran journalist Barnabus Thondhlana told the story of how Dr. Nembaware died. Dr. Nembaware, who worked in the rural area of Hauna, was on his way to Mutare when he had a car accident. He suffered a serious brain injury. When he got to Mutare Hospital, the doctors were able to stabilize him, but the hospital did not have an ICU to provide the special care he needed.
There was also no ambulance service to transfer him to another city. Although there was a helicopter ambulance available, it could not be used because the state was not able to airlift him to Harare, the capital city, for more treatment.
Dr. Nembaware’s family did everything they could to save him. They gathered their money and paid $5,000 for a private air ambulance to take him to Harare. But even this plan did not work. The private ambulance could not take off because the landing lights at Mutare airport were not working.
Sadly, after all their efforts, Dr. Nembaware passed away. His death shows just how serious the problems are in Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
Zimbabwe has the resources to build a good healthcare system, but public money is not being used properly. Every year, a lot of money is spent on luxury cars for politicians, money that could be used to improve hospitals and healthcare for the people.
It is a sad and painful truth that while Dr. Nembaware spent his life helping others, the healthcare system he worked for could not save him when he needed it.
Zimbabwe is now mourning the loss of a great doctor, and this tragic event should make the country realize that something needs to change. The healthcare system is broken, and it is putting the lives of the people in danger.
Reforms are urgently needed to fix the problems in the healthcare system. People should no longer have to die because hospitals do not have the right equipment or because they cannot get the care they need in time. Dr. Nembaware’s death should push the country to demand better healthcare and make sure that no more lives are lost unnecessarily.
May Dr. Nembaware rest in peace, and may his memory inspire Zimbabwe to make the changes needed to save lives and improve its healthcare system.
